SearchResearch Challenge (4/17/17): Finding cartoons despite their descriptions

The other day...

... I was chatting with some friends and we started to talk about the great cartoons from back in the day when we were kids.

Naturally, the conversation went something like this:  "You remember that cartoon where... the rabbit did that weird thing with the edge of the film?"  Or "I'm sure you recall that one cartoon series with Russian characters... what were their names?"

The big problem with remembering cartoons (or movies, or books, or short stories) is that we often get the details all wrong.  Doing our SearchResearch thing means that we can figure out the names and titles despite having almost all of the details be incorrect.  It's search in spite of the data...

Here are two cartoon descriptions that we had a bit of trouble with, but I was able to figure out in the end with just the information provided here.  Until I did the searches, these "facts" were all we could remember.

Given these descriptions, can you figure out what these two cartoons are?

1. This cartoon features a character that's playing with (or fighting with) the frame of the cartoon.  It collapses, and he’s given a stick to prop it up.  Then the frame has a vertical hold problem, and keeps slipping down.  Of course, the end title (“The End”) comes in too soon and he ends up pushing it out of the frame.  Very funny—very meta-cartoonish.  Who is the main character in the cartoon, and what is the title of the cartoon?
2.  This cartoon series is set in International Falls, Minnesota, with two animal characters who talk (naturally).  There are also two Russian characters whose names are puns.  What is the name of this cartoon series?   (And, for extra credit, what university did these two characters attend?)

This is a bit outside of the normal SearchResearch Challenges, but it's an important category of research skill... finding something where the description is fairly inaccurate... but you've got enough information to find it anyway.

Let us know how YOU found the answers to this week's Challenge!

Search on!

  1. 1. I searched for several variations of "character fighting with the cartoon frame". Then it occurred to me that this might be a Looneytunes cartoon. I added that word to the search. Then I tried searching for different Looneytunes characters and finally found a Daffy Duck cartoon -http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/WesternAnimation/DuckAmuck

    2. Sorry, but when you are 71 years old you so well remember the Rocky and Bullwinkle Show, I could not follow your directions. They were a flying squirrel and a moose and they attended Wossamatta U. https://youtu.be/RSVq7X7OPeQ

  3. Hello Dr. Russell and everyone

I enjoyed and learned with this new SRS. Watching again those cartoons and remembering others I like for example, Top Cat (Don Gato in Spanish - In United States Top Cat was not successful but here in Mexico was and is (I guess) still a success.)

Don Gato y su pandilla, más historia para México. Dos productores nacionales lograron que los estudios Warner Bros. les cedieran los derechos de la caricatura para llevarla a la pantalla grande
    Anima Studios makes awesome products

    Back to the SRS:

[cartoon character pushes the end out of frame]

    Western Animation / Duck Amuc

    [duck amuck]

    Wikipedia article

I still need to verify even more but watching video, apparently this is the correct one because covers the hints we have been told.

    Answers:

Main Character: Daffy Duck (Pato Lucas in Spanish)
Title of the Cartoon: Duck Amuck (Esto está de Locos)

[cartoon international falls minnesota two animal characters]

Both characters lived in the fictional town of Frostbite Falls, Minnesota, which was based on the real life city of International Falls, Minnesota. From Wikipedia

    [The Rocky Bullwinkle university]

a mondegreen (American writer Sylvia Wright coined the term in 1954) Una Pomporruta en Español (I didn’t know this) Arriving here from article in English, looking for Spanish version Here also mentions: soramimi

    [sylvia wright mondegreen]

“Mondegreen” means a misheard word or phrase that makes sense in your head, but is, in fact, entirely incorrect. The term mondegreen is itself a mondegreen.

    3. You're welcome, Remmij! Thanks to you for sharing your posts and adding to mine.

I was reading and found an article related to
Mount Rushmore It is pretty interesting. I wonder if Dr. Russell or any other reader in SRS Blog have visited this
19th-Century Lakota leader Crazy Horse emerging from the granite slope of the mountain Also, I wonder if another country carves mountains to have similar monuments.

  10. Anne and I are back after our short hiatus thanks to AP testing (we weren't taking or administering - just displaced and having our schedule put out of whack). So I think I may be about the same age as Dan (this is Deb speaking) and while I didn't watch a lot of cartoons growing up, I knew instantly that question 2 referred to the Rocky and Bullwinkle show. The Russian characters were Boris and Natasha. The Wikipedia article on the show gives lots of background info. Got there by doing search using terms - cartoon set in international falls mn - Then to find out the university used terms university rocky and bullwinkle and found out they went to Wossamotta U. Wasn't sure if you meant them or Boris and Natasha so looked up Boris Badenov in Wikipedia and found out he went to USC - Univ. of SafeCracking. Natasha, according to the Wikipedia article on her, was expelled from college for subversive activities.
    Will post question 1 separately.

  11. Q1). Thought this was a Looney Tunes cartoon because of the description of The End. Thought it would either be Bugs Bunny or Porky Pig Pig. Did a search for - cartoon where character holds up frame of cartoon with a stick - 3rd result was for Duck Amuck article on Wikipedia. Reading the description (and we used control F to find the word stick) we found the description of how Daffy Duck argues with the cartoon animator and the frame falls on him. He tries to hold it up with a stick but that doesn't work. Turns out it was Bugs Bunny who was behind all the mayhem.
